The Name Game

If any of you remember, and you probably do since it wasn't that long ago, it took us a LONG time to decide on a name for Amelia. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was on or within the few days around her due date we finally decided. Andrew could probably tell you when, but I suffer from severe pregnancy/post pregnancy amnesia. Not surprisingly, we are not set on any names for this baby. There are a few that have been repeat mentions, but until we're sure, we're not sharing (see rule #5). Here are the rules for Baby B (which doesn't mean boy (yet); it also doesn't mean we are beginning this child's name with the letter B, although we talked about telling everyone that as a joke). Below are our current rules/thoughts for naming babies. Please don't be offended as they only apply to our children.

Naming rules:

1) Baby B's name cannot begin with the letter A (unless we change our minds unexpectedly). Congrats to the Duggars and other families who can name all 18(19) kids with the same first letter, but the A-Samps will not be sharing in that pattern.

2) The name cannot be unisex.

3) The name cannot be completely unheard of or weird. It also cannot be insanely overused.

4) No crazy spellings. I am unceasingly surprised by the different spellings of trendy names. Example from my era: Geniffer. I hate to break it to well-meaning parents everywhere, but it still sounds the same and your poor kid is just going to have to correct every doctor's office and teacher for his or her entire life.

5) No name claiming. This is technically a rule for everyone else and a good idea in general. DON'T SHARE NAMES YOU ARE WANTING TO USE YOURSELF. It is very irritating to hear someone say, "Well just don't name her Ellie*. That's what I'm going to name my first daughter." You have no idea what names we are already considering and if you have heard of it, then it's possible someone else has too. If you are okay with someone using your name then go ahead and share away. It is unlikely that we would ever randomly pick the SAME name as you if it's really that original. (And if we ever mention names we like that you also like--they are fair game for you to use as well).

6) The name's meaning matters. I think those are all the rules we have as of now. Most likely we will think of more exclusions. On a side note, since naming Amelia I found out that two of my friends also have girls named Amelia and one of them has the middle name of Jane as well. We liked it and thought it was only rarely used these days. A magazine we received in the mail recently had it ranked in the projected top 10 for 2019. The plus side is that soon her name will start showing up on ornaments and school supplies. All that said-- If you have any suggestions for our baby's name, comment away... we'd love some ideas! *Ellie is our cat's name and will not be used for any of our children.

you know, that side note might have made for quite the good rule sondra "rule # X: our child's name will not be one easily confused for a pet's". lol.

oh, and i appreciate all these rules. i'm pretty certain all the names i've liked since i was 7 have already been taken, and/or somehow managed to become super popular (which i never thought would happen either).

in conclusion to the longest message ever: are you saying the name amelia is off limits for us if we have a girl in the very, very distant future? ;)

Haha, Mar! Amelia is not off limits at all. Go for it! I can't wait to have a niece (or nephew) no matter what name you use!!!

(and oops! sorry for my first blog post! i pulled a monica gellar i guess (remember that episode?). you can ignore it - don't worry at this rate, it may never even be relevant!) thanks for posting, i have been waiting patiently for a new one :)

Alicia-

Don't worry about your first blog post. I really wasn't thinking that. With Amelia especially we had a lot of people say things like that to us. We haven't had as much going on with it lately, but we were trying to prevent it! :) I'm all for waiting for my niece Sydney Shellae... no matter how long it takes!

since the three of us "s" girls obviously have fabulous tastes in everything, including names, i'm sure all of our possible future children will have the best names possible (and generate much envy from all the parents who sadly did not have the foresight to pick a decent name).

ok, so sondra, you will still love any of amelia's possible-in-the very-distant-future-some-day cousins even if they have the names "tea'ona" or "santana"? cool. ;)

Mar. you crack me up.

I really wanted to make a funny joke about that name that my mom wrote down from that woman in Louisiana. But sadly, I can't remember it. So hopefully you guys can remember the story. I'm sure you've heard it.

Girls:
Hannah - (means grace) but is super cool because it's also a palindrome!!

Mataya - (means gift of God) I love this name, but will never have a girl! you can totally use it!

Boys:
Daniel - (means God is my Judge) traditional, but not very popular right now

Emanuel - (means we are with God) cool name, even better meaning!
