AJS: One Year Stats

This has been a busy week of Doctor visits for the Samp family. Today was Amelia's one year well child check. She weighed 19 lbs, 12 oz. and is now 28 inches tall. She also is setting the record on brain growth (head circumference). All of this is great news and she is a very healthy little girl. She got 5 shots today (2 meningitis, 1 MMR, 1 Flu, and 1 Chicken Pox). I think the most she has had at a time before now was 3, plus I know the MMR is more painful than others from my own experiences. She just looked at the nurses as they were leaving with a small whimper and lip trembling (after the screams). It's hard to watch, but I am confident it is in her best interest to be vaccinated. It was actually very interesting that the nurse who roomed us asked if we did vaccines as we were getting acclimated. I find this somewhat disturbing that there is a large enough percentage that don't vaccinate that she would ask. More on my soapbox about that later though.

Some questions the nurse asked:

"Is she carrying one thing around while walking or is she walking yet?"
-"Yes."
"Does she know her name?"
-(Andrew nods while I hesitate. Her name is not easy or short so sometimes I wonder). "I think so, but she doesn't always respond." Insert nurse smile. Haha.
"Can she use her pincher grasp?"
-"Yes."
"Can she say at least one word?"
-"Yes."
"Do you always put her in a car seat while traveling?"
-"Yes." (Although, Andrew joked after she left and said, "Nah, as long as we keep it under 70." Who answers NO to that question?!).


Dr. Halbur came in and discussed all the vaccines with us, including flu and H1N1. Then she checked Amelia from head to toe. She also asked what words she can say. When we told her Amelia can say 5 words she was very impressed. We discussed food, teeth & chewing. Amelia can have anything that would be mashable between fingers. She told us that kids don't really use their teeth to chew until they are about 2 when they are getting more molars. Amelia is still not to have raw vegetables, fruit with peels, steak (you're kidding!?), or any peanuts/hard candy. She's not to have peanuts because of the hardness, not allergy. Although, Dr. Halbur said that there was no rush to get her to try peanut butter and some people even wait until their kids are two. We probably won't wait that long. She hasn't shown any signs of allergies yet and we don't think she will, but we would like to be close to a hospital when we try out pb... just in case. Amelia also had to have a finger poked to check her lead levels. It's too bad we couldn't have worked something out last week when it took forever for her finger to stop bleeding. She didn't care for it this time even though she was unphased by a razor cut last week. We're very thankful for a healthy report and I'm glad I don't have to take another child to a one year check up for another year and a half. In closing, here are a few tidbits about Amelia:

Amelia can say these words:
*Dada and Daddy
*Baba (which means Mama)
*Key (which means Kitty)
*Hi (her favorite, usually while waving)
*Hewwo (Hello, usually when having a phone to her ear)

Other fun facts:
*Amelia knows what hairbrushes and bows are for. She holds them up to her head.
*She loves to brush her teeth and will insist upon it if she sees you doing it.
*She has signed more and all done, but not regularly yet.
*Amelia hasn't had a bottle for two nights, but instead a sippy cup. She's doing very well with this so far. Next step: binky... sigh.
*In the last couple weeks Amelia has learned to blow kisses, but it still very random about when she chooses to do it. She first blew a kiss at herself in the mirror. (oh boy...)

Amelia is currently in the 31st percentile for weight,

And the 25th percentile for height (probably Mom's fault).
